IHG vs Barcelo: hotel loyalty vs value for the Gulf traveller
A global loyalty giant versus a value-led group. We compared them on price, the loyalty payback, and when each is the smarter booking.

Booking a hotel as a Gulf traveller comes down to a choice between two philosophies: a big loyalty group like IHG, where the value builds across stays through points and member rates, and a value-led group like Barcelo, where the saving is more often in the nightly rate itself. For a frequent traveller the loyalty maths can beat a cheaper walk-up rate over a year; for an occasional one, the lower rate usually wins outright. Which you are decides the better book.
Loyalty payback vs nightly rate
IHG's value is the programme. A member rate is usually below the public one, points earn on every stay toward free nights, and status brings perks — late checkout, upgrades, breakfast — that have real value to a regular traveller. Booking direct as a member, rather than through a third party, is what unlocks it, and over a year of stays the compounding can beat a slightly cheaper non-loyalty rate. The catch is that it only pays for someone who stays often enough and within the group's footprint to accumulate; for a one-off trip the points are a rounding error.
Barcelo's value is more immediate: a value-led group often prices the nightly rate below a comparable loyalty-brand room, especially on leisure stays, so the saving is in the booking rather than in a future free night. For the occasional traveller, or anyone whose trips do not cluster in one hotel group, the lower rate now is worth more than points that may never reach a redemption. The honest test is your own travel frequency: if you cannot see yourself earning a free night this year, book the cheaper room.
The verdict
If you travel often and can concentrate stays, join IHG and book direct as a member — the member rate plus points plus status perks compound into real value over a year. If you travel occasionally or spread your stays around, book the lower nightly rate, and Barcelo's value positioning often wins there. Either way, compare the direct member rate against a third-party price before booking, because the cheapest public rate and the best member rate are rarely the same number. Both carry live offers on our store pages, and hotel rates soften in the shoulder seasons, so time a leisure stay outside the peak.
